Do You Need A Skin Care Routine?

Your daily skincare routine is important, but have you ever wondered why?

The answer is simple: You need to maintain your skin’s natural balance so that it can heal itself.

If you want to look confident in your skin, it’s going to take consistency and customization to fit the right products to your skin.

A skincare routine is an essential part of taking care of your face and body. It’s also an excellent way to prevent aging and keep skin looking youthful. When you don’t have a plan for taking care of your skin, it can be difficult to know where to start.

Here’s a guide to help you create a customized routine that works well for you.

The Importance Of A Skin Care Routine

Let’s start by clarifying that your skincare routine should always be tailored to meet your specific skin type and needs.

Cleansing

The first step in any regimen is to cleanse away dirt and impurities so that the rest of your regimen can work more efficiently. Cleansing should be done daily, preferably in the morning and evening to soften dead skin and balance oil production. Contrary to popular belief your skin shouldn’t feel squeaky clean. Instead, it should feel refreshed and hydrated.

Mechanical Exfoliation

Next up is mechanical exfoliation, think of your scrub and exfoliating devices. These should be used 2-3 times a week after you cleanse. Make sure your exfoliating beads are circular or they will create micro-tears and broken capillaries which will later become wrinkles. Mechanical exfoliation is great for ingrown hairs, texture, roughness, and dry skin. It should be avoided if you have mature, inflamed, or sensitive skin such as acne and rosacea.

Tone & Mist

Time to tone and mist. These solutions are meant to adjust your skin’s pH back to normal (~4.7-5.7 pH). If the pH of your skin is off it can create a multitude of issues and not allow products to work properly. Here’s a little tip: use cotton rounds instead of cotton balls when applying toner so that you don’t waste the solution. If your skin barrier is compromised and your skin has become sensitive, dehydrated, or inflamed a toner or mist will help restore balance.

Serums

See the difference with serums. They’re the magic potions designed to perfect your skin concern. There are a variety of serums to treat an array of skin concerns so when and how often they should be used is discretionary. A serum is a high concentration of ingredient(s) stabilized to safely correct imperfections, maintain treatment results, and prevent pigmentation and aging.

Moisturize

Moist skin heals best so moisturize daily, both morning and night. Moisturizers come in the form of lotions, creams, or balms that sit on top of the skin and create a barrier from the outside world. It helps prevent water loss from the skin while sealing in ingredients from your regimen. Overall, they improve hydration and keep your skin looking plump and young.

SPF

Rain or shine, never skip out on sun protection in the morning. SPF is essential for protecting against sun damage, including premature aging of the skin, fine lines, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation (i.e., freckles, and blemishes). If house plants can grow indoors then UV rays are present so the excuse of working indoors or from home won’t apply. Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen that offers protection from UVA and UVB rays. SPF in makeup is not enough so you want to choose SPF 30 or greater.
