What To Do After A Facial—The 5 Dos and Don’ts

What to do after a facial and more importantly what not to do.

We’ve all been there. Had a great day at the spa, a relaxing facial treatment, and left feeling great. Only to encounter burning, irritation, pigmentation, and/or breakouts over the next few days. This might be because you didn’t use a trained and certified esthetician, or you might have missed a few of these dos and don’ts after a facial.

To minimize any post treatment breakouts and ensure lasting results, it’s important that you know how to take care of your skin after a treatment.

Your skincare provider should tell you all the dos and don’ts after your treatment. But in all the excitement over your new skin, it might have all went over your head. No worries, your in the right place, Glowsthetics Skin Boutique has got you covered!

Let’s Start With The Basics:

Estheticians and skincare professionals are not magicians! We’re trainers for your skin, so its expected that you commit to your skin daily by making healthy choices. Minimize breakouts with the basics:

  • Drink plenty of water daily half your body weight in ounces of water to flush out toxins that can lead to breakouts and dull skin
  • Eat leafy greens & foods high in essential fatty acids and antioxidants such as nuts and berries to strengthen and protect your cells
  • Ice your full face daily in circular motion to reduce inflammation and pigmentation
  • Wear your SPF rain or shine, its proven to minimize concerns such as aging and uneven skin tone
  • Get at least 6-8 hours of sleep daily so your body can fully reset, reduce stress and hormone fluctuations

What To Avoid After Any Skin Treatment:

Post treatment your skin should be adequately exfoliated so that the treatment and products can continue to work and repair your skin. The correction is not over when the treatment ends, which is why its important to know what to avoid after your treatment:

  • Avoid excess sun and tanning beds for at least 5-7 days after any treatment. Sun damage and skincare do not mix well and can hinder your treatment results. Wear a hat and reapply your SPF every 2 hours anytime in the sun!
  • Do not exercise, use the sauna or sweat for at least 48-72 hours after any treatment. You want to relax and stay cool. Workouts and saunas create heat and sweat which can lead to skin irritation and even cause reactions. So its best to just chill after treatment.
  • Skip all exfoliating treatments 3 days after getting any treatment. This means the AHAs, BHAs, retinol’s or any vitamin A derivatives, unless otherwise recommended by a professional.
  • Do not shave or wax any treated areas for at least 48 hours or up to 2 weeks after an advance treatment such as a chemical peel. Shaving or waxing too soon can cause burning, irritation and redness and can lead to hyperpigmentation.
  • Avoid wearing any makeup for 24 hours after your treatment for the best results. This allows time for your treatment benefits to set in, as well as your skin to heal and breath.

Follow Your Skincare Recommendations:

Lastly, follow the daily skincare regimen your provider offers you. Don’t slack or make excuses!

The only way to get true results is by creating change. A daily regimen will provide a healthy environment for your skin to repair itself and create the changes you want to see in your skin!
